Creating a Unified Clinic Environment with Patient Sensitivity in Mind
The goal was to consolidate multiple specialty services into a single modern clinic while providing a sensitive separation of patient journeys and a supportive care environment.
This project renovates a 1994 medical office building to support the growing needs of University of Iowa Health Care in the Des Moines metro area by bringing together services from the Specialty Clinic in Johnston and the REI Clinic at Jordan Creek while introducing cancer support services. A key design challenge was creating two separate entrances with a main entry for Specialty Clinic and Cancer Care patients and a secondary entry for IVF patients to ensure privacy and prevent crossing paths with pediatric patients.
The renovation emphasizes functionality and patient comfort with essential support services, including a non-retail pharmacy with compounding rooms and a lab. Through close collaboration with users from every department, the layout was shaped from early planning through the precise placement of medical equipment to meet the needs of each specialty. The interior design blends softness and natural light to create a calming environment, with nature-inspired tones that promote well-being. A light-filled atrium with clerestory windows anchors the lobby and pharmacy, helping define a welcoming environment and creating a unified clinic that supports sensitive patient journeys and elevates the overall care experience.
