Expanding Emergency Care With Privacy and Efficient Patient Flow
The goal was to create a larger Emergency Department that expands treatment capacity and strengthens the connection between the hospital and the adjacent clinic.
We worked with Spencer Hospital to create a comprehensive master plan that helped define the needs of several key departments and set a new vision for the campus. The design focused on improving circulation and supporting patient privacy by using an on stage off stage model where a central work core is reserved for care teams to reduce noise and activity near treatment rooms. The site strategy was driven by the need to streamline transfers from the Avera Clinic across the street which led to removing a city street to bring the new Emergency Department closer.
The expanded department includes larger treatment rooms, two trauma bays and two rooms designed for behavioral health patients along with a larger waiting area that supports families during emergencies. An attached temperature controlled ambulance garage improves access for regional providers and a partial basement below the new department provides space for utilities and storage along with a new garage for the on campus ambulance fleet.
The result is a patient centered Emergency Department that supports privacy and improves response time to strengthen regional access to care.
