Designing a Flexible K-5 Campus that Unifies Early Learning and Supports Specialized Needs
The goal was to expand an existing elementary school to accommodate growing enrollment, unify preschool programs and provide dedicated spaces that support special education, sensory needs and teacher collaboration.
York Elementary is expanding from a 4-unit K-5 school to a 6-unit facility in response to increased enrollment and the need to bring preschool programs from three separate buildings under one roof. Beyond standard classroom needs, the design focuses on supporting special education by providing dedicated Success Classrooms with quiet and active sensory rooms for students with higher needs. Resource spaces are located throughout the building to minimize transition time for students who need space outside the classroom. Within each classroom pod, resource and special education rooms sit immediately adjacent to the learning environment to support students who require minimal intervention.
The addition of new early learning spaces creates a unified preschool environment, and the increase in enrollment drives the need for additional activity and gross motor space, which is met by adding a small gym that serves both the elementary and preschool. Renovations to the main entry expand administrative space and give the school a refreshed identity.
