Designing a Connected Learning Environment for Young Students
The goal was to create a flexible K-4 learning environment that supports collaboration, discovery and community pride while consolidating multiple schools into a single modern campus.
The new Grinnell-Newburg Elementary School represents a forward-looking investment in the district’s vision for its youngest learners. Designed as a two-story five-section K-4 building, the project reflects a close collaboration between our team and district leadership through an iterative design process focused on listening and refining. Inside, the layout prioritizes flexibility and connection to classrooms and shared learning spaces, with efficient circulation routes. Purposeful nooks, locker bays and gathering areas create moments for collaboration and discovery. A full competition-sized gymnasium with seating for 200 spectators supports school and community events. The exterior design uses precast concrete panels with alternating formliner and reveal patterns to create a playful rhythm that appears random while relying on just two panel types to streamline fabrication.
Constructed on land donated by the Ahrens Foundation, this is the first newly built school for the district in more than 50 years. It will consolidate three existing schools, including one that has served students for over a century and represents respect for the past and optimism for the future.
