Bringing College-Level Career Training to Rural Iowa Students
The goal was to expand access to college-level career training across five school districts by creating a central academy with specialized labs for hands-on learning.
Western Iowa Tech Community College partnered with five local school districts to expand access to college-level career and technical education for high school students in rural western Iowa. The Regional Career Academy on WITCC’s Denison campus serves as a central hub for that instruction, with career pathways aligned to Iowa’s workforce needs.
The facility combines flexible classrooms with specialized labs to support hands-on learning. An automotive training lab gives students space to learn auto body and painting skills, while nursing simulation rooms support healthcare training. A central commons provides a place for students to collaborate. Each career pathway includes a third-party certification or postsecondary credential, giving students a way to begin preparing for an in-demand career while still in high school.
