Improving Campus Recreation Access and Flow
The goal was to reconfigure the main entry to improve circulation, support staff efficiency and enhance the overall experience for students using this high-traffic access point.
The entrance renovation at Iowa State University’s state gym focused on resolving circulation challenges at a critical west campus access point. With heavy daily use, Recreation Services identified the need to improve operational flow by reconfiguring turnstiles and adding lanes to reduce bottlenecks near the control desk.
A key component of the project is the relocation and redesign of the reception desk, which now provides clear sightlines to both entry points, improving security and supervision. The new layout supports point-of-sale access control and equipment checkout functions while maintaining close collaboration between desk staff and the Adventure department, located near the rock climbing wall. Additional improvements include integrated lighting and heating within the desk to improve staff comfort. Signature red accents and refreshed finishes bring a modern aesthetic that aligns with the existing gym environment while delivering a more intuitive and welcoming entrance experience.
