Modernizing an academic landmark
The goal for this project was to update and revitalize the University of Iowa's Hardin Library, maintaining its innovative features while enhancing accessibility.
The renovation of the University of Iowa's Hardin Library, an award-winning structure designed by Walter Netsch, revitalizes its 62,000 square feet to meet modern academic needs. The library was originally built in 1974 and maintains innovative features such as the 24-hour space and the John Martin Rare Book Room. This comprehensive update enhances accessibility with ADA-compliant restrooms and transforms the fourth floor to maximize daylight and study spaces. The refreshed areas feature a variety of flexible furniture arrangements that cater to different learning styles, offering a mix of casual seating, study carrels and tables alongside improved electrical access, ensuring a conducive and adaptable learning environment for students.
