I Have a Dream...

Every architect’s dream is to work on a signature project that will make a difference in the world.  When that opportunity presented itself, CMBA | Smith Metzger jumped at the chance to be part of the Global CommUnity Center. A vision of community activist, Dennis Kelly, the center is dedicated to people from around the world to learn, heal, educate, perform, meditate, live, explore, dance, sing, and to share and celebrate life's adventures. Renowned individuals in their field from around the world would be invited to the Global CommUnity Center to share their knowledge, skills, talents and gifts. Imagine a world class event involving the Dalai Lama and Deepak Chopra in the city of Des Moines!

“This creative and dynamic space will provide a model for cities around the world to embrace as we all come to the realization of our Oneness.” Dennis Kelly

The desire is to locate the Center in the downtown core along the Des Moines River and complement the Principal Riverwalk with meditation gardens.   Gardens are planned to calm visitors and users from the hustle and bustle of normal everyday life. The Center is comprised of three parts connected by a lobby overlooking the river. The design of the Global CommUnity Center embraces the wisdom and beauty of all the elements of Nature.   Eastern traditions such as Wind, Water, Earth, Fire and Ether are all highlighted throughout the space. The main focus is a two story portion which references the shape of the lotus flower.  At the first floor is a 300 person multi-purpose space opening to the gardens.  The second floor houses a 300 person, round meditation hall with a large round skylight in the center flooding the space with natural daylight. A sloped form contains an 800 seat auditorium with large rotating panels which would open to views of the river and downtown.  A recording studio would complement the auditorium so events can be offered to the world. A four story L shaped tower completes the complex with a banquet/conference room and an organic café on the first floor. The second floor provides a Healing Arts Center for a variety of modalities such as acupuncture, reiki, massage therapy, sound healing, etc.  Guest housing on the second floor provides temporary living quarters for visiting dignitaries.  Condos or apartments for like-minded individuals would be located on the third and fourth floors.

“The Global CommUnity Center will be a destination for people of all nations and backgrounds to share and celebrate life.” Dennis Kelly
